The term forensic is defined by Webster's as of relating to, or used in legal proceedings or argumentation.

In the majority of cases, if a structure, such as a building, bridge, retaining wall, storage tank, etc., suffers damage, it is frequently related to the ground support at the site. Forensic engineering is the field in which answers to the questions of what happened, why did it happen, how can it be corrected and what can be done to prevent reoccurrence of this problem are addressed. Answers to the first two are frequently necessary to assist those in legal proceedings.
